I'm just a student, but I *believe* that inward spiral helps

*to root the thigh bones in their sockets
*maintain the natural lordotic curve of the low back
*engage muscular energy in the thighs

Thus, ultimately, it helps with foundation. With inward spiral (properly balanced with outward spiral), one should feel more rooted and balanced in standing postures, and far more controlled and strong in inversions.

"innward spiral" is when you drink too much champagne at a bed & breakfast. ;)

Inner Spiral (also called Expanding Spiral) is the third Universal Principle of Alignment, coming after Open to Grace and Muscular Energy.

After creating the boundary of hugging the shins to the midline through Muscular Energy, Inner Spiral, starting at the ankles, turns the thigh in, moves the femur back and widens the inner thighs appart. The pelvis will tip forward from this action creating more lumbar curve.

These actions create space in the pelvis floor and allow muscles such as the psoas to align well.

Inner Spiral is followed by Outer Spiral (or Contracting Spiral) which, keeping the space from Inner Spiral, roots the tailbone toward the heels. Lastly Organic Extension lengths the body through the core lines.
