Today I drove an hour to get to ones class and was surprised to find us starting with sun salutes-- i didnt thikn it was as integral in Anusara. I have an old fracture in my wrist and some tendonitis in my opposite shoulder, so not to be a wimp or anything but I kinda poop out on the 5 or 6th chaturanga dandasana. My chin actually kinda hit the floor during one -- I know I need to strenghten there obviously-- but i was wondering-- does ALL yoga move through the vinyasa and sun salutes??
Next yoga class:

And, if you are a yoga teacher (or a soon to graduate yoga teacher) looking to share your knowledge, practice karma yoga (community service), and put yourself in the public eye, come join in & volunteer your services making yoga affordable for every individual. Pick one Sunday per month . . Teach as many months as you would enjoy doing. . . .

Yoga teachers will receive a $25.00 gift certificate from Sports Basement (per yoga class) & can use the platform as a way of promoting themselves and their unique yoga experience.

Regardless, it's a grand opportunity to start the year on the right path, meet some like minded individuals, see life in a different light, & calm the mind.

* Yoga teachers of all schools of yoga are invited to teach.

My own practice and teaching has evolved from the Anusara teaching sufficiently that I stopped using the name more than a year ago. I was simply reluctant to leave. But now that John is increasing the expectations and setting stricter boundaries about what is, or is not, Anusara, it seems prudent to let it go.

I will always be very grateful to John and my other Anusara teachers. I feel a little adrift now. Part of the growth process.

Because it was a relatively small group (about 15 people for most sessions), I got a lot of attention from them that you normally don't get in an Anusara workshop. As well, the smaller size allowed us to be playful and they just improvised and played along. It was also my first workshop with two senior teachers, and they are married to each other! The chemistry was nothing I experienced before.

They are in town for another week to do the Immersion 1. I simply can't wait.

PS: It's an even smaller group for the immersion. Yoga workshops just don't get any better than that. If you live close to Calgary, don't miss it. There's still room in the immersion.

STORIES OF MAYA & EMPOWERMENT
Asana with Noah Mazé

at Mission Street Yoga (www.missionstreetyoga.com)

The yoga traditions abound with stories about the power of illusion, Maya, and the many ways we construct reality from appearances, imagination, and perception. In the Tantric tradition illusion is yet another form of the divine Shakti and the power of Maya is seen as an important yogic gift that permits us to construct, imagine, and live a more meaningful, truthful life. In this seminar we will look at a series of myths and stories about illusion and its many forms and powers. These stories, rooted in the Ancient Lore, particularly goddess myths, the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and Ocean of Tales offer empowering and creative teachings about recognizing truth, creating meaningful appearances, and living in a world that reveals, conceals, deceives, and invites us to construct meaning because it is Maya.

On both weekend days, you can also choose to participate in a two hour mixed-level Anusara Yoga classes taught by Noah Mazé. These classes will incorporate teachings and themes from the weekend lectures as they warm up and open your body, mind and heart. On the sticky mat, we will assimilate the weekend teachings in the way that we move with our breath and align ever deeper with the currents of grace. No prior knowledge of the subject is necessary, bring yourself, an open mind, and a willing heart.

She is about 4 months along at this point. She did the backbends in the workshop, counter to her intuition and what she had read about backbends being contraindicated for pregnancy. After the workshop, she said her lower abs were painful and overstretched and she was angry with the teacher for his advice to go forward.

What do you advise for pregnancy and backbending? I was only a beginning yoga student when I was pregnant many years ago, so the deepest backbends I did were bridge poses and I never had any problems. I don't have a good frame of reference to advise her from.

So I just completed an Anusara Yoga Teachers Training and Workshops with the man, John Friend, in Miami Florida.

John Friend is incredible, the guy is hanuman, yet he's also an extremely likable, somewhat goofy dude.

"Take a breath, enjoy your breath."

"Inner body bright."

Things I learned (some philosophical, some physical, all anusara) :

1) Everything relates back to chit-ananda, or universal conciousness, living in the heart and present moment. The universe is a divine dance of concealment and revealment just for the joy of it (like peekaboo).

2) The tailbone roots down, but the sacrum actually goes up in almost all the poses. This is because the pelvis contains the water element of the body, but the upper belly contains the fire element. Water moves down, fire moves up.

3) There are 4 desires:
a) atha - basic wealth/prosperity/food & shelter kind of thing
b) kama - pleasure, like the kama sutra
c) dharma - right action, duty
d) moksha - spiritual liberation.
Instead of seeing these as a staircase to climb, getting to moksha at all costs, Anusara uses a non-dual tantric philosophy which puts them in a more circular arrangment, integrating them all.

4) How to use the inner body's energy to move through poses. This is super charging my practice. Because of being able to use my inner body and just the right amount of muscular energy I was able to practice 8 hours of asana a day for 2 days straight without really feeling tired.

5) Purna - everything is already perfect. ahhh....

6) South Beach Miami rocks.

7) John Friend totally rocks.

8) All the beautiful Anusara Yogis fantastically rock.

Wow, I could go, and will go on and on about this.

Many thanks...

Karl Erb was first exposed to the Gita at age 11, then in High School and UCSC, and since 1996 has been studying with Swami Dayananda Saraswati at Arsha Vidy Gurukulam in Pennsylvania. The teachings will be strongly based on Swami Dayananda's teachings. Karl will have the texts for study copied and for purchase. We will use at least one of Swamiji's books on the Gita as well as other sources. Karl teaches yoga teacher training programs and philosophy in the SF Bay Area.

Karl began the study of yoga asana in 1983, and has been studying the Yoga Sutras since that time with many teachers including Baba Hari Das, Mandira Haynes, Ramanand Patel, Georg Feuerstein, Swami Dayananda Saraswati and more.

AND TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM

WITH CERTIFIED ANUSARA INSTRUCTORS

NOAH MAZÉ, NAIME JEZZENY, AND SCOTT LEWICKI

This six weekend intensive Anusara Yoga Studies and Teacher Training Program will take your yoga practice to deeper and deeper levels. This program is transformative and has the potential to impact not only your yoga practice and teaching, but also your life. We will cover an extensive curriculum of all of the principles and practices of Anusara Yoga such as asana (postures), pranayama (breath work), meditation, yoga philosophy and mythology, and the art and technique of teaching. This Anusara Yoga Studies and Teacher Training Program will consist of two phases: Phase 1, Immersion in Anusara Yoga (level 1). Phase 2, The Art of Teaching Anusara Yoga (level 1). Each weekend will include 14 hours of instruction from Friday evening through Sunday. In addition, there will be a few hours of home practice and homework given after each weekend.

Phase 1: This is an intensive-style, experiential deepening of all of the aspects of Anusara Yoga. Over three full weekends we will fully immerse ourselves in connections of Body, Mind and Heart through the joyful and profound practices and principles of this yoga. Asana (postures), pranayama (breath), and meditation will be explored in depth. Our philosophy curriculum will include the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Ramayana. Some prior Anusara Yoga knowledge and experience is recommended, as well as an open heart, attentive mind, and willing body. One does not have to want to be a teacher to participate in Phase 1.

Phase 2*: How does one share with others what is deeply profound and life enriching? Over the next three weekends, we will build upon the foundation of Phase 1, and expand into the Art of Teaching, Level 1. Becoming a great yoga teacher requires a willingness to deeply delve into one’s own authentic nature, a process of effortful practice, personal joyful exploration and continual transformation. This Anusara Teachers’ Training offers a setting and structure for you to become such a teacher. We will learn and practice the techniques and methodology of teaching Anusara Yoga. Curriculum includes: proper postural instructions, sequencing, developing and using themes and philosophy, speaking from the heart, observation skills, physical adjustments and assisting, intro to Therapeutics, and use of props and modifications.

All hours will apply to Anusara Yoga Certification and Yoga Alliance Certification. There will be further training and mentoring opportunities following this program.

Noah and Naime are widely recognized and sought out as some of the most experienced and proficient practitioners, teachers, and teacher trainers in the Anusara Yoga system. They teach extensively together all over the country and make a dynamic and powerful team. They are delighted to teach with guest teacher Scott Lewicki, and his experience and wisdom will greatly enhance the program. (See our website for complete bios.) *Completion of Phase 1 is a requirement for participation in Phase 2. Qualified individuals may be able to petition the instructors to proceed

PHASE ONE: Immersion into Anusara Yoga explores all aspects of Anusara Yoga, including the Universal Principles of Alignment. This is a workshop based immersion and will include many joyful hours of yoga (asana) practice each weekend. Weekends 2006 (plus Friday evenings): January 27-29; February 3-5; February 17-19
We’ll focus on:
- Therapeutic applications of Universal Principles of Alignment
- Transforming your yoga practice and yourself

I completely agree. However, one cannot deny that the hindu/yogic tradition represents that there is a point in one's sadhana that the practioner connects to the heart and that connection is then never severed. Further, I have definitely meet some very highly evolved beings, mostly Indian Hindu and Yoga gurus that give testiment to high states of liberation or enlightenment. The Sakti that was present in these various beings gave great witness that they knew what they were talking about. What are your views?

From a series of lectures that Douglas gave on the Ramayana of Valmiki:

"The upside down (ujjani) goal of the Rajanaka isn’t that you escape your samsara. It is that you become fluent in the unfolding of being. In other words, you turn to samsara which is moving in recurrence. Sara means “current.” Samsara means “caught in the current” or “held in the current” or “subsumed by the current.”

The ordinary world really is madness, really is samsara. We keep doing the same stupid thing expecting something else to happen. The goal of the Rajanaka then is not samsara but anusara. You become “with the current.” You literally become the current.

In your vulnerable moments you are held by the current, floating. In your empowered moments you swim with the current. In your ultimate moments you and the current are one. You don’t feel the difference between you and the current. That's Anusara."

Think about it.
From John's last Anusara newsletter:

Principles of Anusara Yoga Philosophy
A Tantric Philosophy of Intrinsic Goodness

The vision of Anusara is grounded in a Tantric philosophy of intrinsic Goodness and includes the following basic ideas:

The absolute essence of everything is Supreme Consciousness, which pulsates with pure Goodness. Vibrating with the highest Bliss imaginable, the Supreme pulses with the deepest desire to know Itself through an endless variety of creative expression. Out of Its absolute freedom, the immeasurable Supreme divinely dances all of creation into existence in order that It may enjoy t he astounding experience of diversity. As the play of Divine Consciousness, the One conceals and then reveals Its own blissful nature throughout the never-ending majesty of creative manifestation.

Life is Good. As the free and joyful, creative expression of the One, it is a blessing to be embodied in this life. Through this limited physical form we are able to experience our Unlimited Being. Life is a magnificent gift of the Divine, not some sort of karmic punishment, nor something we need to transcend. This material world is ever changing, yet it is not an illusion, nor a mistake of one's perception.

The body, mind, and heart are all various levels of divine embodiment by which we may experience the ecstasy of recognizing and glorifying the One in the many. The physical body is a magnificent manifestation of spirit, not an inferior material vessel. Similarly, our thoughts, desires, passions and emotions are essentially not obstacles to spiritual awakening which need to be squelched or eliminated, but instead they are God-given means of glorifying and expanding our experience of the Divine. Therefore, we seek to continually develop and refine all parts of ourselves: body; mind, including our reasoning and intuitive capacities; and our emotions, including the deepest virtues of our heart.

Because we are microcosmic reflections of the Supreme, we are free to be, to know, and to create within our individual limitations. We are able to feel, think, and act in relative, limited ways because we vibrate with the Supreme's unlimited desire; the power of directly knowing and expressing this desire. Our entire experiential consciousness is a mirror of the Divine and the Divine's self-concealed form. Everything that belongs to the Divine is within us. Our experience of diversity and difference is an affirmation of the Divine's own experience of inclusiveness, non-prejudice, and celebration of plurality.

Goodness is the absolute nature of the world. There is no intrinsic or absolute evil in the universe. No one or thing has a malevolent or evil essence. However, having free will, human beings are capable of errors, mistakes, and deliberate malevolence—moving out of alignment with the Divine in a way which creates suffering and harm. Certainly not everything in the relative world of manifestation is as good as everything else. So we freely choose to use our limited power of discrimination and judgment to align as best as we can with the Good, which leads us toward a revelation of our joyful true nature. By aligning with the power of the Universal we are able to directly know the auspicious nature of the Divine within our bodies, minds, and hearts.

The purpose of Life is both to awaken to our True Nature, and to serve Life by bringing more goodness, love, and beauty into this world. Spiritual awakening is the ever-expanding process of recognizing that our true nature is perfect, full, and lacking nothing. Spiritual freedom or enlightenment is not a fixed state of being. Rather it is an ever-evolving process of unfolding our beauty, goodness, balance, and perfection. Progress on the path of awakening is reflected in an increase in one's spiritual centeredness; wisdom; trust in the Divine's play; ability to loving honor the Divine in each other; and ability to celebrate the divine beauty in life.

The Anusara community is inclusive, life-affirming, and evolving. I ndividuality and creative self-expression, which glorify the greatness of the kula are encouraged and celebrated. Anusara welcomes all forms of spiritual or religious self-expression, and cultural and ethnic diversity, which are heart-centered and which foster love and happiness. We acknowledge, respect, and invite a diversity of experience both within our own community and among those outside the community who are seeking to align with the Divine. We lead by the simple example of our own lives, invite others to practice our yoga, and respect others' choices to express their views and values without prejudice or rejection, with deep respect and tolerance of differences.

Anusara literally means "flowing with", but we take it to mean "flowing with grace". Grace is always there, we just have to open our hearts to it, to allow it to flow. Grace is something greater than what we "expect", grace is the divine. Always present, always flowing.

Anusara Yoga is basically a system of 5 Universal Principles of Alignment created by John Friend (www.anusara.com) designed to bring us into optimal physical alignment so that we can really open into our heart.

Universal Principles of Alignment

1) Open to Grace, Set your foundation. The foundation is the part of the pose that touches the earth. This is also where we set our intentions, which is grace.

2) Muscular energy. Engaging all muscles in the body, "hugging to the bone", drawing energy up and in.

3) Inner Spiral. Alignment of the legs and arms using inner spirals.

4) Outer Spiral. Balanced action in the alignment using an outer spiral.

5) Organic energy. Using the prana to expand outward from the core lines of the body. This is where the "stretching" occurs.

That's Anusara in a nutshell, you really have to go take a class with an official teacher to learn exactly what all those terms mean. I would suggest it to everyone as something to learn, as the principles are universal and apply to any yoga pose, mountain climbing, bicycle riding, walking down the street or just sitting up using a computer.

Namaste!
